RIDA Workshop
Revitalization of Historical Building at Blue House
10 am to 5 pm, June 7, 2009 (Sunday)
Blue House is a 4-storey balcony-type tenement block located at 72-74A Stone Nullah Lane in Wan Chai. Named for the brilliant blue colour painted on its external walls, it is one of the few remaining examples of Tong Lau of the balcony type in Hong Kong. It has been classified as Grade I historic building, and the Urban Renewal Authority and the Development Bureau recently announced plans to re-develop the site. The plan allows original residents to continue living there after refurbishment, while incorporating social enterprises to run the remaining units so as to revitalize the 90-year old buildings.
On 7 June 2009, there will be a one-day workshop at the Blue House in which interior design students will be given a chance to design the interior spaces for these enterprises on site, which include a vegetarian restaurant, a minshuku/hostel, rooftop farming, an arts & crafts workshop and a museum. In keeping with the theme of the RIDA seminar, the workshop will emphasize not only aesthetics and functionality, but also issues of public health, safety and well being.
The workshops will be supervised by leading interior designers and educators, including prominent members of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association. This is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable field experience and educate themselves in historical building revitalization, one of the emerging trends in interior design.
If you have any querries about this worthwhile project, please do not hesitate to contact Simon Chung at 93632023 or by email at darshanchung@gmail.com.
